After reading thousands of books over the years and thinking to himself that he could do better than a lot of traditionally published authors, in late 2013 John R McKay decided to give writing a go.

The result is he is now an award winning author after recently winning the Aspects of History Unpublished Historical Novel Award for his novel, Hell and High Water, which has subsequently been published by Sharpe Books.

His works range from epic 20th Century historical fictionto a short contemporary dark comedy covering the theme of mental health (“Mosquitoes”).┬áSurviving The Arctic Convoys – The Wartime Memoirs of Leading Seaman Charlie Erswell, was released by Pen & Sword in June 2021. book, which was his first non-fiction book, is a collaboration with a veteran of the Royal Navy who served on two destroyers during the Second World War.

Two of John’s novels, “Mosquitoes”, and the World War One drama, “The Sun Will Always Shine”, were long-listed for the UK International Novel Writing Competition in 2017.

In 2018/2019 John worked on a story for the anthology ‘The Darkest Hour – World War II Tales Of Resistance’ which was available for a short time in early 2019. The Darkest Hour became a USA Today bestseller and all proceeds from the sale were donated to the National Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C.

John appeared on World War 2 TV (WW2TV) to talk about the Arctic convoys and book, Surviving the Arctic Convoys.

John lives just outside Wigan in the North West of England with his wife, Dawn and has two grown up daughters, Jessica and Sophie. He has one granddaughter, Elsie.
